Unit 4: Cell Biology
The cell is the basic unit of life, and controls every process that occurs in our body. Building on the students previous work in middle school on cell structure and function, this unit seeks to gain an in-depth understanding of how the genetic material in cells controls the processes that occur in the body, and how cellular input leads to reactions that help to maintain homeostasis. The unit will also examine how cells are set on a pathway of differentiation, ultimately becoming the many different types of cells that make up the human body. Students will learn to use cell study techniques such as the compound light microscope to both view and conduct tests on cells in a laboratory environment.

Unit 3: Macromolecules
Macromolecules are the chemical basis for all life on earth, and perform myriad functions in the bodies of all living things. Classically broken down into four categories (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids), student understanding of macromolecules will hinge on the jobs of each in the body as well as the similarities and differences of each class. In addition, students will get a chance to view macromolecules from a nutritional standpoint as well, including a diet analysis that will provide information to each student regarding the composition of their diet.

Unit 2: EcologyToday our global environment is being stressed by many different factors, including habitat destruction, pollution, invasion of non-native species, global warming, and depletion of the ozone layer. The more students understand about the complex relationships that drive our natural ecosystems, and the degree to which humans depend upon these ecosystems for their very survival, the better prepared they will be to make environmentally sound decisions in their lifetimes. The content and activities included in this unit were carefully selected to help students develop the understandings and skills necessary to become an environmentally literate member of our society.
